At the intersection of form & function.

RJ is a designer currently applying my skills in a few different industries. At Engineers’ Forum Magazine, he is the creative director and in charge of editorial. He is also involved in research for Boeing, exploring creative solutions for large-scale manufacturing problems. Technology is one of his greatest interests, as he is also involved with the Advanced Manufacturing & Prototyping Lab at Virginia Tech, where he conducts 3D printing research.

Work Experience

Graphic Design & Marketing Intern | ClearEdge3D - June 2020 - Present
Redesigned and updated their website to be contemporary with the times. Created multi-page brochures that advertise each of their software products. Software splash page design. Graphic design lead on Scan to BIM University - logo, branding, apparel, merchandise, editorial, layout. B2B marketing content creation and mailing list management.
Treasurer | VT IDSA - August 2020 - Present
Helped organize virtual conferences for Virginia Tech's chapter of Industrial Design Society of America. I was in charge of the budget and facilitating member dues, as well as dispersing award money for competitions.

Creative Director | Engineers’ Forum - January 2019 - Present
Creative director for the Engineers’ Forum magazine, Virginia Tech’s premiere student-run science and engineering magazine. I create the layout for each issue, as well as the custom graphics that compliment each story. I also run the website, and produce advertising material.

3D Print Lab Liaison | VT CAUS - September 2019 - Present
A student-run 3D printing lab, we provide a resource for any Architecture + Design student to prototype their models using additive manufacturing methods. The staff also work on independent research products throughout the year.

Layout Team Member | Studio Collective - Fall 2019
Studio Collective is the official design journal of the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech, and celebrates the work of students with the aim to broaden awareness and conversations about design. I worked alongside the layout team to create Volume 12, Perception.

Marketing Designer | MicroAutomation - June 2018
Created a product video to advertise the company’s 911 call center software. Designed and animated their logo for the opening sequence, created 3D animations showing their mascot moving through the video, and aided in the explanation of the software.

Undergrad Research
Retooling Bamboo Tectonics
Using custom parametric design, photographic scanning and digital fabrication work flows, this research aims
to extend and expand the development of a bespoke contemporary bamboo aesthetics. Specifically, CNC machining setup and operation & digital design and fabrication workflows through Rhino and Grasshopper explore the opportunities and limitations of bamboo as a contemporary design material for standardless environmentally conscious fabrication methods.

Eye Tracking System
I worked with a computer science professor and graduate student to design a robotic system that uses computer vision algorithms to track the eye positioning of a person using a video call software, and then map that movement onto an x-y positioning robot that controls the webcam movements, in an attempt to achieve eye-to-eye communication over video call.

Jewelry Design
Using digital CAD softwares I aim to manufacture and bring to market a line of high quality gold jewelry. Partnering with a company such as Shapeways will allow me to quickly produce high-fidelity pieces at a low cost.

Applications of 3D Printing Technology
Using tools in the School of Architecture + Design’s Additive Manufacturing and Prototyping Lab, I have been experimenting with procedural modeling methods to create parts that are structurally optimized, as well as material efficient.
